Kos is an island in the Aegean, belongs to Greece. It is part of the Dodecanese Islands (Southern Sporades in the southeastern Aegean Sea). 4 kilometers east of the island lies the coast of Ionia today, Turkey, the area of the Bodrum resort. The name of the island may have been derived from a crab, which in ancient times was depicted on coins as an emblem.
