Amritsar is a city in northwestern India, in the state of Punjab. Amritsar is the holy city of the Sikhs. It was founded by the fourth guru Ram Das in 1577. The city received its name from the sacred pond, in the center of which is Harimandir (Golden Temple), the main Sikh gurdwara. In the main temple complex of Amritsar, Akal Takht is located. In Amritsar, many important events of Sikh history took place, including recent years.
