Chandigarh

Common description

Chandigarh is a city in northern India, the capital of two states at the same time - Punjab and Haryana. However, Chandigarh is not administratively part of these states, but has the status of a union territory. Population: 901,000 Men (2001).

The city of Chandigarh was built in 1951-1956 by the French architect Le Corbusier. The original city plan was prepared by American architects Albert Mayer and Matthew Nowitzki, but Corbusier partially revised it. A new location was proposed for the city - on the plain at the foot of the Himalayas. Corbusier himself designed the complex of administrative buildings of the city, the Capitol - the Secretariat, the Palace of Justice, the Parliament, the Palace of the Governor. The supervision of the construction of the city was carried out by the French architect Pierre Jeanneret, Corbuzier's closest employee. Pierre Jeanneret also designed - in collaboration with English architects Maxwell Frye and Jane Drew - residential urban buildings, many public buildings (schools, hotels, etc.).
