Kerala is a state located on the Malabar coast in southwestern India, with an area of 38,863 km2 and a population of 33.4 million (2011 census). The official language is Malayalam.
The state was established in 1956 and the main definition of the border was the spread of the Malayalam language. The name Kerala literally means "land of coconuts". From the Malay language, the word Kera means coconut tree, and alam means earth.
