Haridwar

Common description

Haridwar is a city in the state of Uttarakhand, the administrative center of Haridwar district. Nestled on the banks of the Ganges, Haridwar is one of the seven major holy cities of Hinduism. In Hindi, the name of the city means "gate to God" (spades means "God" and Dwara means "gate").
In the Haridwar area, the Ganges descends from the Himalayas to the Indo-Gangetic plain. That is why the city got its ancient name - Gangadwara - the place where the Ganges descends from the mountains to the plains. .For those four places (Kharidwar, Ujayin, Nashik and Allahabad), the largest Hindu festival of Kumbh Mela is held every three years, with millions of pilgrims and tourists from all over the world.
