Yogyakarta (Indonesian: Yogyakarta) is an ancient city in Indonesia on the island of Java. The capital of the Special District of Yogyakarta, ruled by the Sultan. Named after the Indian city of Ayodhya.
The city is located 30 km from the volcano Merapi. Until 1006, m was the capital of the Javanese-Indian kingdom of Mataram, destroyed by the eruption of Merapi.
