Tossa de Mar, one of the most picturesque cities of the Costa Brava, sung by poets and served as a source of inspiration to many artists, was known in the early 1920s as a holiday destination for wealthy Europeans. The vast city beach borders on one side with a rugged rocky shore, where sea cliffs form deep grottoes, narrow straits and secluded coves, attracting dreamers, romantics and explorers of the underwater world. On the other hand from the city beach is located one of the most famous national monuments of the Costa Brava - the medieval fortified city of Vila Vella. Founded in the 12th century and surrounded by a fortified wall with three tall cylindrical towers, this medieval citadel gives a special charm to the whole city. One of the most popular walking routes for tourists goes along a stone staircase that gradually rises to this fortified city and along its winding pedestrian paths specially laid for visitors. From the height of the fortress you can enjoy breathtaking views of the sea and the surrounding area, and numerous restaurants and cafes along the way invite everyone to relax, listen to the colorful Spanish motifs and try local specialties.
Cadaqués is the northernmost tourist destination of the Costa Brava. It has beautiful rocky beaches, there are not so many tourists in the city - only one, quite steep, road still leads to the city. The city has preserved some interesting architectural monuments, for example, the baroque church of Esglesia de Santa Maria. In the 1960s Cadaques has become a Mecca for all fans of Salvador Dali, who lived near the city in Port Lligat Bay. The Perrot Moore Center for the Arts presents works by Dali, Picasso and some other contemporary artists.
