Common description

The province of Salamanca is located on the southwestern edge of Castile and Leon, on the border with Portugal. The city of Salamanca is quite large (160,000 inhabitants), while retaining the original identity of the village. In Salamanca, residents speak the purest Spanish in the country - Castilian - so Salamanca is incredibly popular with those who want to learn Spanish from all over the world.

Salamanca is located on a plateau on the river Tormes, which crosses a 500-foot long bridge, part of which is of Romanesque origin and dates from the sixteenth century. The city was founded in pre-Roman times near the River Douro. In the III century BC Hannibal captured the city and turned it into a large commercial center. Then it was called Salmantica. Salamanca is considered one of the most prominent Renaissance cities in Europe. A century later, thanks to the buildings made of gold stone mined in the surrounding area, the city acquired a golden glow, and was called the "golden city". Throughout its long history, Salamanca has witnessed Spain's most important historical events. In 1218, King Alfonso IX of Castile founded the first Christian university in Salamanca. Under the patronage of King Alfonso X, the well-being and reputation of the city increased significantly, and his law school attracted students from the Universities of Paris and Bologna. Among the students of the university were Miguel de Unamuno, Miguel de Cervantes, Ignatius Loyola, poet and writer Mateo Aleman, Hernan Cortez.

Especially remembered in Salamanca is the old Romanesque cathedral, which was founded in the XII century. The altar of the cathedral was painted with frescoes by early Renaissance artist Nicholas Florentino. Among his treasures is a bronze crucifixion handed down by El Sid his priest.

The centerpiece of the city is the large square (Plaza Mayor), one of the most beautiful squares in Spain, designed by architect Churrigera in the early eighteenth century. To meet the Salamanca, you do not need to make a rendezvous, you can easily find anyone in the large area known as the living room of all Salamanca residents.

Salamanca is a real university city. The university in the city is the oldest in Spain and in all of Europe, which still creates an atmosphere in the city. You can see hundreds of students strolling in the university quarter, resting in bars and cafes until the evening. In 2002, Salamanca was proclaimed Europe's cultural capital.
