The ancient city of Luoyang was founded in the XI century BC. and served as the capital for the 9th Tang and Song Imperial Dynasties. Luoyang, a city on the north bank of the Lo River, is one of the oldest centers of Chinese civilization. He served either the sole or second capital of 9 early dynasties. In the heyday of Luoyang, V c., South of the city in the sandstone grotto began the creation of Buddha statues. Subsequently, nearly 100,000 statues and reliefs were created here in 2000.
Although many statues in Lunmen's grottoes were badly damaged during the persecution of Buddhists in the ninth century, and later by robbers, they still remain outstanding monuments of religious art.
