Havana

Common description

Administrative, political, cultural, scientific, as well as the country's main tourist center, the cosmopolitan province of Havana is the smallest and most populous province of Cuba. The beginning of tourism in this part of Cuban territory goes back to the middle of the XIX century, when a regular maritime connection between the United States and Cuba began and construction of hotels around Havana Bay began, and now more than half of all foreign tourists visiting the country visit Havana.
Its main charm - the city itself, with its diversity of architecture, wide avenues and famous boulevards, and especially its historic center, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The city lives a rich cultural life, there is no end to scientific activity, but at the same time on the 47 km of the coast there are 20 km of beaches, also suitable for diving and fishing on the high seas. The capital has considerable hotel and leisure infrastructure, and its natural environment protects a wide green belt. The two main symbols of Havana are the Giraldilla weather vane and the lighthouse of El Morro Fort, and the three places where everyone wants to visit are the Tropicana Cabaret, the Bodegita del Medio Tavern, and the Florida Bar.

To make your stay especially enjoyable, we recommend that you visit:

The historical center. The starting point for the excursion may be El Templet - a small neoclassical-style chapel built in 1828 at the site where the city was supposed to have been founded; then your way will pass through the Armory Square (Plaza de Armas), the Cathedral Square (Plaza de la Catedral) and the Old Square (Plaza Vella), around which are magnificent ancient buildings and structures that were once part of the surrounding city walls.

Cannon Shot Ceremony. A magnificent traditional ceremony takes place every night at nine o'clock in the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabana. In the colonial era, a cannon shot served as a signal to close the city gates and draw a chain between the fortresses of El Morro and La Punta, which barred ships from entering the bay. Today, this moment marks the beginning of a fun Havana night.

The Jose Marti Memorial. This important memorial on the Square of the Revolution of Jose Marti was inaugurated in 1996. It houses various relics, original objects, documents and engravings related to the life and work of the Apostle of the Cuban Revolution. At the top of the obelisk - a concrete, marble-lined tower 138.5 m above sea level - is the highest observation deck of the capital.

Paseo del Prado. Although this boulevard is not the oldest in the city (there was another one - Alameda de Paula), Paseo del Prado has been the most important central artery of Havana for centuries. This tree-lined boulevard runs from Central Park to the famous Centennial Malecon - the Havana waterfront.

The Havana Christ. The work of the famous Cuban woman sculptor Hilmi Madera, it is one of the largest monuments of the capital and the largest open air statue made of Carrara marble by a woman. Its height is 18 m, it rises to the top of La Cabagna hill above the entrance to Havana Bay.

Palace of Fine Arts. More than 47,000 exhibits are stored in the holdings of this museum complex, which, after careful work on enlargement, reorganization and restoration, is now considered one of the most significant among such institutions in the world. The Cuban Art Department, housed in the former Palace of Fine Arts, has collected works by more than 300 artists of all generations, and the nearby Asturian Center has art from other countries around the world, including works by Flemish, Dutch, German, French, Italian, English, American, Asian, and Latin American schools; there is an interesting collection of art from the Ancient World (Egypt, Greece and Rome) and the largest collection of Spanish paintings from all that exist outside the Iberian Peninsula.

Ammel lane. This is an open-air museum of African art. It is located in the Cayo Ueso area, and its most prominent feature is a 100 m long wall mural by the self-taught artist Salvador Gonzalez.

The farmstead "Vichy". In this estate, located in the municipality of San Francisco de Paula, on the outskirts of the capital, operates the Hemingway Museum. Together with the fishing village of Kohimar, it is one of the main places associated with the life in Cuba of what is called the Bronze God of American Literature.

La Rampa. One of the main central arteries of the Cuban capital. About one kilometer long, this avenue descends from L Street to the seafront - Malecon.

National Botanical Garden. It covers an area of 600 ha. It is divided into 18 zones and about a fifth of it is allocated to native plants. One of the main attractions is the Garden of Japan, donated by the government of this country in 1989 and created by the master of garden art, Yoshikuni Arake.
