Rabat (Arabic: Ar-Ribat, meaning "fortified monastery", cf. Russian Arbat) is the capital of Morocco, its cultural and industrial center. Population 1,622,860 inhabitants. Directly adjacent to Rabat is the city of Sale, separated from it by the river Bou Regreg and together with it is the capital's agglomeration.
