Mexico City, the country's capital, is considered the cultural capital of all of Latin America. This largest in the world and the oldest in the New World city impresses with a large number of monuments to the pre-Spanish and colonial past.

In the capital and its environs there are 1,400 monuments and historical relics, 10 archaeological sites, 80 museums, as well as a huge number of theaters, folk art centers, concert and exhibition halls. The history of the city dates back to the middle of the XIV century, when the Aztec tribe founded its settlement Tenochtitlan on this place. By the XVI century, the beginning of the period of Spanish colonization - the number of settlements was 200 thousand. In 1521, after a long siege, the city was captured by the conquistadors under the leadership of Fernando Cortes. Only 300 years later, in 1821, Mexico City regained its independence.

In the center of the city on Sokalo Square are the National Palace - the official government residence - and the Cathedral - the oldest Catholic church in America.

The favorite place of tourists is Chapultepec Park, where there are many attractions: National Anthropological Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chapultepec Castle, Zoo.

A famous monument of the colonial era is the cathedral, built in honor of the patron saint of Mexico - the Blessed Virgin of Guadalupe. An unusually beautiful holiday with a solemn procession, held in her honor every year on December 12, gathers about a million pilgrims from many countries of the New World.

The most beautiful avenue of the city - Paseo de la Reforma, built on the model of the Champs Elysees, where there are historical monuments, the most important of which - the Monument of Independence of Mexico from Spanish colonization - the Angel, which became the city's calling card.

40 km from Mexico City are the most famous and mysterious monuments of Indian culture: the Teotihuacan Archaeological Reserve with the pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the Street of the Dead and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (Feathered Serpent). Occupying an area of 23 square kilometers, this city is the largest archaeological site in America.

The historic center of Mexico City, the suburbs of Soshimilco and the Teotihuacan Archaeological Area are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
