Common description
Built over 450 years ago, Merida is the social and economic center of Yucatan. It is an ancient city with its traditions, where the architecture of the Spanish colonists and Europeans is present. There are still cabriolets on horseback rides on the streets of the city.
You can see the architectural monuments of antiquity: the Church, the largest in Yucatan, built in 1598; Municipal Palace; Casa del Montejo, built in 1542 by the family of discoverer Merida Francisco de Montejo and today houses a branch of the Bank of Mexico. On Sundays, roads for motorists close and the holiday begins. The streets of the city are filled with dancing folk groups, and at 13.00 a traditional Mayan ceremony is held near the Government Palace.
