Common description

Tao is a turtle island in Thai. Origin of the name - Many of the sea turtles lived off the coast of Koh Tao, and they bred offspring on its coast.

But lately the turtles have almost disappeared. This is due to the fact that the newborn turtles seek the most illuminated place (at night), which previously allowed them to find their way to the sea, now the beaches are occupied by restaurants, hotels and diving centers that disorient newborn turtles. Another version - the outline of the island resembles a turtle. The sea turtle statue can be seen on the coast at the main port of the island (Mae Haad).

The main difference from the neighboring islands is the marine environment, which is convenient for diving and snorkeling, which is why diving centers are located on every convenient beach.

The nearest airport is Samui Island. The island is connected to the mainland and the surrounding islands by ferries, the main port is located in Mae Haad. The main means of transportation around the island (about 95%) are motorcycles and scooters.

Interesting facts - From 1933 to 1947, Ko Tao was a political prison;
