Common description
Phu Quoc is a paradise that you can safely call the island of your dreams, its nature is so delightful and unbridled: magnificent tropical forests and rocky mountains, beautiful sandy beaches and a rich underwater world with coral reefs and rare underwater flora and fauna. In addition, there are two large pearl plantations on the island — Japanese and American — and so many call Phu Quoc a “pearl island.”
Phu Quoc is 65 km from the Southwest coast of Vietnam and is the largest among its islands. The area is equal to Singapore - about 600 sq. Km.
The fantastic nature of Phu Quo is striking in its splendor - on the island there are 99 mountains and hills covered with relict forest with rugged vegetation, as well as many charming waterfalls and bubbling rivers, and, of course, amazing sandy beaches with crystal clear sea water.
At the beginning of the 17th century, Phu Quok was a desert area where Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants lived, who provided for their collection of sea ginseng. From 1782 to 1786, as a result of the battle with Tai San, the island passed into the possession of Lord Nguyen Ankh, who later became Emperor Gia Long.
In 1869, the island was captured by the French, after which vast coconut and rubber plantations appeared here. From 1967 to 1972, during the Vietnam-US war, a prisoner of war camp was located in the occupied Phu Quok. And only after liberation on April 30, 1975 the island was transformed into a magnificent resort with extraordinary nature and beautiful beaches, becoming a favorite place for many travelers.
Phu Quo has a subequatorial monsoon climate. There are two seasons in a year - the rainy season, which lasts only a month - October, and the dry season, respectively - from November to September.
You can travel to the island all year round, but, of course, the best time to relax is the dry season, when it is always clear and sunny. Traditionally, the peak tourist season is the period from mid-November to mid-May.
Paying tribute to traditions, numerous festivals dedicated to the festivals of various temples and the memory of national heroes are celebrated on a large scale on the island.
The pride of the island is the large Diving Center, which appeared here recently - in 2002. So diving enthusiasts will have a rare opportunity to be one of the first to explore the underwater world of these wonderful places. A great variety of unusual bright fish, corals and besides there are no dangerous sharks, which distinguishes Phu Quok from other popular places for diving.
