Pondicherry, formerly Pondicherry - a union territory of India. The capital is Puducherry. Population 1,071,625 people (3rd place among the territories; data from 2007). The name Puducherry, corresponding to the Tamil pronunciation, was adopted as official in September 2006; in Tamil Puducherry means "new village".
The territory of Puducherry is formed by four small non-contiguous areas (former French colonies) - Mahe on the Arabian Sea and Puducherry, Karaykal (Carical) and Yanam (Yanaon) on the coast of the Bay of Bengal from those areas that until 1954 constituted French India.
The official languages of the territory: Tamil, French, Telugu (in the district of Yanam), Malayalam (in the district of Mahe).
