Udaipur is a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, the center of the eponymous district. In the past - the capital of the Rajput principality of Mewar, known since the VIII century. The population is 559 thousand inhabitants. Historically, Chittorgarh was the capital of Mewara. The local ruler was considered the eldest of all Rajput princes. After the ruin of Chittogarh by the Mughal forces, led by Akbar Raj, he chose a high place and began in 1570 the construction of a new fortified residence. Udaipur is currently competing with Jaipur and Jodhpur for the title of the main tourist center of Western India. The city is full of picturesque palaces located along the shores of lakes, which Udaipur has long been famous for. Among the most famous monuments of Udaipur are the Rajah Palace complex (XVI-XVIII centuries), the White Lake Lake Palace and the Jag Mandir Palace, in which Shah Jahan was hiding from the wrath of his father Jahangir.
Udaipur is mentioned in Kipling's Jungle Book as the birthplace of Panthera Bagheera.
In Udaipur, the Indian part of the plot of the movie “Octopus” from the James Bond series was shot: scenes in the Khan’s palace were shot in the Monsoon Palace, the Lake Palace was shot as the house of the “Octopus”.
